Organizer & Instructor
Ryan Martin
Ryan Martin’s love of jazz music initially inspired him to start swing dancing in 1996. Since that time, the music and dance of the swing era have become major preoccupations in his life. He has been dancing and teaching various swing dances off-and-on for twenty plus years. And in the last ten years he has expanded his involvement by studying the history of these dances. Ryan has travelled around the U.S. collecting interviews with dancers from the original swing era, and he completed a feature-length documentary, called "The Rebirth of Shag", that focuses on one swing dance in particular, the Collegiate Shag. He was one of the original co-founders of the Hot Rhythm Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote and sustain the jazz music and dance forms that originated in the early part of the twentieth century. For eight years Ryan was involved with running that organization and its main event, Hot Rhythm Holiday. Today Ryan travels to teach and compete in Collegiate Shag, both domestically and abroad.

The program is focused on creating contest teams, advocating for junior swing dance opportunities, and mentoring dancers who want to work toward specific goals within the swing dance community. Julie enjoys working with people to find the parts of dance that inspire them most so they can find the spaces and skills that bring them joy. She also loves exploring the technical skills that give people mastery over their movement so they can embody the music in whatever ways they choose.
Instructor
Zach Lockett-Streiff
Zach’s first encounter with partner dancing was overhearing his dad’s attempt to sign him up for lessons as a child. He promptly screamed in terror, and the studio never called back. He joined his college swing club in 2010 – much to his dad’s bewilderment – and the rest went downhill from there! Sporting a bit of a rebellious streak, Zach likes to question convention through a respectful but pragmatic lens. The historical record is deeply important to swing dancing, but equally important is not forgetting the foundational African-American dance values in the process. In this spirit, Zach values authenticity and actively-engaged partnership. And dad jokes. Zach is one of the leaders of the Texas Shag scene (which is very near and dear to him). He is especially invested in helping the Austin Shag community grow, and refining his skills and self to meet the challenge. Teaching and social dancing are his passions, and he can’t wait to share both of them with you! *ahem* with y’all.

He has performed across North America, in Europe and the Caribbean.
Musician
Alex Guilbert
Alex Guilbert has been part of the Seattle Jazz scene for decades, performing and recording with some of the Northwest’s finest musicians. His interest in early Jazz was cultivated as a member of Holotradband, a 7 piece traditional jazz band that had a 10 year weekly residency at the storied New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Pioneer Square. His familiarity with the swing and early Jazz repertoire has made him a perfect fit for dance events, which he plays for frequently, both as a leader and sideman. Alex also hosts and curates the popular “Piano Starts Here” series at the Royal Room, and writes and produces scores for video games by day.
Musician
Hans Teuber
Hans Teuber has been a mainstay on the Northwest jazz scene for over 25 years, working with Wayne Horvitz, Jeff Johnson, Clay Giberson, and others who lean toward progressive jazz. On his first album as a soloist, Teuber relied on his compositions as the framework for his work on alto and tenor saxophone, flute, and clarinet. His orchestrations are engaging pieces of work without becoming raucous or loud. They naturally tend to frame his considerable fluency and facility with the horns, especially the alto which he seems to favor, such as on "More Illusions" where his alto lays down the playing line while members of the rhythm section dart around like bees buzzing around a nest. In contrast, still on alto, "C Minor Waltz uses more abstract figures. "B.C." opens with Teuber's feathery flute giving impressions of a sylvan setting before seguing in somewhat of a controlled, creative free for all with one instrument playing against another. "Bom Pra Caramba" is the result of modern creative jazz ideas applied to a Latin beat. The tenor comes into play on "Old Fellow," giving the music a dreamy aura as Santi Debriano shows imagination on a lengthy bass solo. While the music on this CD is quite pretty, one wishes there were a bit more diversity. After a while, a certain sameness creeps in, which is always a risk when the musical agenda is prepared by the same person. One or two classics or jazz standards would have elevated this CD to a more interesting level.
